It had to happen eventually...
So, I finally did it. Mashed the H-Wing into another vehicle on the way to a charity event in Norco.

SIGH.

I'm fine, but my car is mushed, and I'm bummed. As if I didn't have enough time off the road this year with the broken leg in May, June and July. I'm hoping they don't total it out. Kelly Blue Book retail is $5745, and trade-in is $1850. That's a wide range... I also don't know what Mercury is going to say about my "modifications". All in all, it was a pretty lame experience, but no one got hurt. Yet.

I was heading down the 91 East on my way to Norco. traffic was slow, around 35 MPH. At about the 60 mile mark the guy in front of me, in a blue Dodge pickup, stopped.

Without the benefit of brakelights.

I stopped, too, using his truck as a brake. My hood folded up, and bumper sliced in two. Nothing injured but my pride.

So we pulled onto the shoulder to exchange info. He came and looked at my car, and he said he didn't suffer any damage. I looked at his, and he was right. I did no damage to his truck, other than a bit of paint on the underside of his chrome bumper. I went back to my car to get paper to write down contact info and info on his truck, and he left.

Went away. Vamoosed. LEFT THE SCENE OF AN ACCIDENT.

I suppose he figured that, since he didn't have any damage, he could take off. It would have been nice to have official verification that his lights weren't working... Grrrr.... All I remember about the truck is it's an early 90's Dodge, first LP numbers 5T, Medium blue color, with a 14" Nazi Skull sticker on the tailgate- kind of like this:

So I filed a CHP report with an officer who thought I was a moron for incriminating myself on paper ("You hit him, he took off, and you STILL wanna file a report?"), had the car towed, got picked up by my long-suffering wife and am now back home.

I have to say it's really lame to be in a flatbed tow truck, with your mashed car on the back, getting honks and waves and thumbs ups from passing motorists who still think your car is cool despite being smooshed.

The tow-truck drivers, on the other hand, had the time of their lives.

Gah that sucks royally... I tell people whenever they are in a traffic collision, to write down the license plate before they even get out...

Guess that's why I haven't seen it in the lot recently...

Hey Shawn, this is Karena's Shawn. I followed a comment in Brian's journal here, looking forward to tales of your next brush with fame. It looks like I'm extending my sympathy instead, I'm so sorry. :/ That sucks bigtime, and I can't believe that dude just up and took off.

I'm glad nobody was hurt, though. If you can get consideration from the insurance company for the modifications you made to the H-Wing (maybe soften them up a bit with the history of charity appearances you've made?) then you can build a new one, even better; a new project to look forward to. (You're probably too nice a guy to go Imperial... though the thought of force-choking that wanker on the highway is mighty nice. -_-)

Grr, I want to slap the chippie. "Yeah dipshit, honest people are still around, I know you're a war-hardened asshole, but try to pay attention? Broken taillights, did you miss that part?"

well...hmm it doesnt look too bad. bumper, lights, hood panel...shoot it might even add some character to that hood panel!...and it looks like your radiator's been crunched. The big thing will be the frame, for which I will keep my fingers crossed...but even that can be fixed. :)

We can rebuild it, better, faster, stronger!

Sorry to hear about the car accident Shawn! By the way, just an FYI from what I understand of California vehicle code anytime someone is rear-ended fault is automatically placed on the person rear-ending you.

Hopefully they wont total your car that would really stink as that car is a labor of love. Hope all is well otherwise.

Geez, I grieve just seeing that picture, but moreso I feel anger at the brazen personal insult you were dealt. I really hope you're able to get it fixed up again. :( At least I can keep it running virtually, -did you get the pictures needed?

Oh Shawn, I'm so sorry to hear this. Is it really beyond repair? Is it not driveable anymore?

Those asses without brake lights were always one of the major dangers of the Los Angeles freeways. I hope that guy gets what's coming to him. :P

I hope something can be done for your car... Long live the H-Wing!

There's more than one reason why a guy with no taillights and a Nazi skull sticker might take off before the police got there. It was probably best that you reported him, though that may be cold comfort.

Aw, man, my condolences. That sucks! However, I have faith that the H-Wing (or something like it) will one day fly the friendly highways again.

Sympathies on the accident. Very glad that you and your lovely wife are O.K., and "cool" despite being smooshed by happenstance.

Any thought to calling Monster Garage or Pimp my Ride or one of those shows? They might want to fix it and make a show out of it.

Luke still blew up the Death Star without R2D2, who was shiny new in time for the medal ceremony.

Long as you're OK, what has been damaged can be repaired. I wish you lots of time and money to do so.

Sorry to hear, but good luck on the repairs!

So sorry to hear the news. Any word on whether the frame is okay or if the insurance company is going to total it? *sigh*

(*Really* not thinking good thoughts about the turkey with no brake lights, though.)
