Home again, home again...
The H-Wing has returned home. It still needs an awful lot of work, and I have more questions the more I poke around.

On the plus side, after a lot of pressure from folks I put a "donation" button up at www.h-wing.com, and people are actually helping out! I must say it's heartwarming and humbling. The only tangible feedback on the car I usually get (aside from the occasional note under the wiperblades) is hate mail, so it's really a shock to see people give praise with their pocketbooks. Thanks to those that have helped out- I'll send something more personal directly to you.

The bodywork went okay, but the driver's side is off around the headlight, like the car had a little stroke. I go back tomorrow to have 'em tweak it. They also painted some interior parts a strange shade of green- not sure why. But they are a really good shop, and I'll post some info on them when I get this wrapped up.

On the way home from the shop, my brakes were barely working- so I had Loyola Automotive check it out. The mechanic said that the engine is great, but the Master Brake Cylinder is going. I go to Pep Boys tomorrow to have that fixed, as it's under warranty, but it begs the question: Did I have an accident because my brakes failed? I mentioned to Colleen at the time of the collision that it seemed that I had a hard time stopping (I had slammed the pedal to the floor, in fact, and the wheels that should have locked up didn't), but I later attributed that to my perception of the truck in front of me without brake lights. Not that it matters, but inquiring minds want to know.

And, as expected, Mercury Insurance has assigned me "Bad Driver" status. Since they won't insure my car for more than half the market value anyway (they totaled it and gave it a "salvage" title), I should probably either just get liability or go to a different company. They really have been not communicative or helpful, and the estimate on the car was uninformed and unfair. Things like apparently interpreting rust-colored primer paint as real rust, and saying my tires were old when I bought them a month ago.

But weather and time permitting, I hope to spray a little paint this weekend. I still want to re-debut at the Doo-Dah Parade in Pasadena on the 20th, so keep your fingers crossed!.

AAA costs a little more than the cheapest rates you know, but I, me, Selina, the meek and humble of means have always had AAA... they are the best, and have a great reputation for just that reason... I get liability, minimum and roadside service for under $400 a year. I feel pretty secure and good about them. Just so's you know. They are "Old School". I like that.

Poor H-wing... feel better soon!

And yeah, MyShawn has AAA insurance, I think, and they've been good to him so far. I think he even gets some money back at the end of the year if they overestimated payments.

Chiming in on AAA, they've been great for me, and when my car was totaled the check covered the new car, and then some.

I had AAA insurance for a long time, then when I bought hy house in 2001 I added a homeowner's policy to save money... but then they jacked with me on the homeowner's policy, so I moved everything to State Farm.

State Farm rocks.

Unless you've had state farm jack up your rates for homeowner's after covering a driveway replacement, the way they did my mom's. Oh, and had a clause that she couldn't cancel her insurance for a minimum of two years after any claims. My mom has left them for Farmers, I believe.

My dad likes AAA, too.

My insurance recommendation, as always, goes to USAA, if you qualify: if either of your parents or Colleen's parents served in the military or worked for DoD, you can join. More here.

My dad was in the military, but he's not a member, so I'm not eligible. Thanks, though.

AAA really hosed me after my car was totalled three years ago -- thanks a lot, teenaged girl driving a Ford truck while talking on your cellphone! When the three years were up, I asked them if they would reduce my rate, and they said I had to wait for the new policy period, so I'm switching to Wawanesa.

My car and home are with Traveller's, and I've been pretty happy with them so far.

Sorry to hear that! We're also with AAA, so far so what.... a friend says her dad had it, and found out where the triple comes from: After his accident, they paid off all claims made by the other at fault party, then tripled dad's rates!! He quit them and went elsewhere....

Donation button a good thing....

Good to see you at the SciCenter, hope to see you soon!
