Nov. 16th, 2009 @ 08:02 pm My all-time Favorite Commercial
I was just cleaning up my hard drive and going over some archives to delete from my "Video" folder, and came across this gem:

So, I uploaded it to YouTube to share.

Be sure to pay attention about 90-seconds into it, and don't blink.

Sign the Petition to get it on the ballot. Even if all you can do is to print out the PDF, sign it yourself, and mail it to their offices, that's a stamp well spent.

I've played a little more multiplayer Uncharted 2. It has it's pluses and minuses. There are 'boosts' that add bonuses to your character, but they are only available once you've reached a certain level of multiplayer play. So while I have the boost that allows me to carry more ammo, someone else may have the boost that lets you see enemies through walls. Arg. But on the positive side, you can only have 2 boosts enabled at a time, so that hopefully limits the unfairness to some extent.

On the definite plus side, the multiplayer is still really fun. There is a 'plunder' game-mode in which the two teams try to pick up golden idols and return them to their home base. But when you're carrying a treasure, you're really slow and the other team is blasting away at you.

And the other bizarrely addictive thing about multiplayer mode is that the game stores the games as 'video' files, so you can rewatch your exploits. But it's not just a movie of what you saw in the game; you can detach the camera from your character and just roam around watching the action from wherever you like. If you're of an artistic bent, you can add fog and lighting effects, go sepia-toned and tilt the camera a few degrees for that artsy look. About the only thing I'd tweak on it is that, although the movie highlights your teammates with a username halo over their head, the enemy players don't have them and more infuriating... your own character doesn't have one. So if you wander off with the camera and want to find yourself again, it's not easy.

Okay, now books: The Hunger & Losing My Religion )

I had been aware that the Space Shuttle was due to launch today but with the weekend activity and my doctor appointment today I completely forgot to make any note of it here. D'oh! But the launch looked great and anyone wanting to see the video can look for more here: http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/shuttle/main/index.html.

The Phuckit Phase of Loscon preparation.

This is the point at which I stare at what needs doing before LosCon and just want to say, PHUCKIT!

The phase in which I swear upon all that is holy that I will NOT dothis again.

Until, you know. next year.

Nov. 15th, 2009 @ 02:49 pm The Sugar Queen by Sarah Addison Allen
This is not a sequel to Garden Spells nor does it take place in the same town. It's sort of in the same world because some people have "talents."

For example, Josey always knows when her true love is near.

Chloe, and I love this, always has the perfect book show up for her. She doesn't pay for them. They just appear in her life. Sometimes it can be a pain for her. For example: her boyfriend cheats on her. The book that shows up is something about learning to trust again. She doesn't want to. However the book sort of follows her around. It just keeps appearing where she is. It's actually quite funny.

Josey is secretly in love with the mailman. Meanwhile, Della Lee shows up in Josey's closet. (Josey still lives at home even though she's 27.) In this closet Josey hides her stash of romance novels and candy and junk food.

This book is about Josey mostly, but it's also about Chloe and Della Lee, their lives and loves. It wasn't as good as Garden Spells, but I did enjoy it lots.

Nov. 15th, 2009 @ 02:36 pm "It was a nice talk, but I thought he was going to be talking more about space"
Demeanor: busy
I mentioned previously how I was going to be in Richmond last night to attend the talk given by Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson last night, and so it came to be, and I loved it. The guy is very entertaining and does a tremendous job of enthusiastically communicating big ideas in an understandable fashion. The funny thing was that I've seen so many of his talks and lectures on Youtube that I already know a lot of his positions and responses to certain popular questions and ideas, and so despite him actually being right there in person I still felt a little like I was watching a Youtube clip. Happily he had a lot to say which I'd not heard before and I enjoyed the whole night immensely.

When I arrived at the Landmark Theater I was struck by the age group of the audience. At least half, if not 75% of the audience were of grandparent age, and I got the impression that the majority of the audience were there not because they were intrigued by Dr. Tyson or what his talk was going to be about, but because they had season tickets for these talks. The quote I used to title this entry came from one of the two ladies sitting next to me; they were very pleasant and enjoyed his talk but definitely were coming simply because they had tickets. To backtrack a bit: last night's talk was put on by the Richmond Forum, and the usual procedure for obtaining tickets is to purchase a season pass for all the talks offered (and future guests include such names as Steve Forbes and Condoleezza Rice). When I called to inquire about tickets the recording had said everything was sold out, but when one of the operators called me back they said that some of the tickets are usually cancelled before the show and I could buy one of them. Score!

The reason I want to put the audience in context was because it explained for me the reason why Dr. Tyson's talk wasn't so very much on space, but rather on the importance of supporting and cultivating science education across the nation. Most of his prepared talk focused on the consequences on *not* investing in science education. Some examples he used where a comparison of the nations of the world speak English, Spanish, and French due to the support and funding during the Age of Discovery (Italy, he noted was more interested in funding cathedrals than discovery and now only Italians speak the language). Another example was the proliferation of certain countries in the discovery of elements in the periodic table (he asked why all the elements on the right of the table were called "Noble Gases"? Because they were discovered in Great Britain and those elements don't interact with anyone else.) Another point was in discussing the codification of Islam around the year 1100 which decreed that mathematics is the work of the devil thus dooming the entire culture to scientific irrelevance, -an incalculable tragedy when considering that nearly all the stars in the sky were studied and named by Islamic scientists in the three hundred years prior to the codification. Finally he displayed a series of slides which first showed all the nations in the world according to their actual size, then a second with their sizes exaggerated to depict their scientific influence which showed the United States very prominent, but then followed up with a slide showing the trends from the past decade where the influence of the United States had shrunk to "embarrassing" levels.

My take from all this was a clever sales pitch for the invigorated investment of funds into all scientific pursuits to an audience of people who clearly had the resources to be philanthropic if convinced in the need. Doubly clever because the talk was very entertaining throughout and yet the message was clearly communicated.

The Q&A session afterward was unfortunately brief since his talk had run long (he earlier said he had 90 minutes of material to discuss in only a 45 minute schedule). One interesting questions asked were his thoughts on the importance of manned exploration of Mars (not nearly so important as the need for NASA to chart any decisive inspiring missions that get new people and students to enthusiastically dedicate themselves to its accomplishment). Another question concerned the power of Google to present you with a selection of results which can play into the human psychological condition known as "confirmation bias" and how you should pay more attention to the results coming from .edu sites. The most entertaining parts came at the end when he was asked if he knew any good astrophysicist jokes, -his facial reaction was terrific.

I bought his autobiography but was disappointed that all the signed copies had sold out just a few minutes prior. No matter, -it was a great night and I'm so glad to have attended!

Soup weather has arrived here in SoCal (yes, yes, you Canuckers can laugh your frozen asses off at me). We had a roast chicken carcass to dispose of, so Himself made chicken stock and then tossed in a bean mix, some Mexican noodles and veggies.

Dinner for the week.

Now I want to unearth the crockpot.

Tony Alamo has been sentenced to 175 years for having sex with children.

I used to see a lot of Alamo tracts around UCLA back in the day, when he was still based in Hollywood. They were clearly the work of a madman. Sadly, there were signs as early as 1988 that Alamo was physically, if not necessarily sexually, abusing children.

Wow, there's plenty of crazy still to be found at his ministry's website:

Pastor Alamo has been criticizing the government for forty-five years with the truth and they’ve been slinging false accusations for forty-five years. You have to decide who you’re going to believe--this government which has already been proven to be socialistic and communistic, or Pastor Alamo who is teaching you the truth. Either you believe Pastor Alamo or the homosexual Pope.

Nov. 11th, 2009 @ 04:51 pm The Lost Art of Gratitude by Alexander McCall Smith
This is the 6th Isabel Dalhousie novel. In it, Isabel sees Minty again and is convinced to help her with a little problem. Minty's son is not her husband's son. He's her ex-paramour's. And that man wants visitation rights. Isabel is to convince him otherwise.

But nothing is as it seems with Minty and the things that involve her.

Meanwhile, we see a lot of Charlie, Isabel and Jamie's son. Will those two ever get married? And how will Cat (Isabel's niece and ex-girlfriend of Jamie) feel about it?

Professor Dove writes Isabel a disquieting letter. What will come of it?

This was a good novel in this series. I recommend it, but an acquaintance with the characters is best in order to understand everything that's going on.
